Hair, the fastest growing tissue in the body, consists of proteins known as keratins. Each hair strand comprises three layers: the medulla (only in thick hairs), the cortex—which dictates hair's strength, texture, and color—and the protective cuticle.
Roots within follicles beneath the skin’s surface, known as the dermal papilla, receive nourishment through blood, essential for hair growth and health. Since only the roots are living, proper care of the scalp and overall health is crucial for maintaining and promoting hair growth.
Treatments that claim to treat the visible, non-living part of hair often offer little benefit, as they cannot revive dead tissue. However, many such claims are used primarily to market hair care products.
Hormonal influences, particularly androgens like testosterone, can lead to follicles shrinking, thinning hair, or complete hair loss. Remarkably, only bone marrow cells grow faster than hair. A typical scalp has 100,000 to 150,000 follicles and hairs, with 90% actively growing and 10% in a resting state.
Hair growth occurs in three stages: anagen (active growth), catagen (transitional phase where follicles shrink), and telogen (resting phase) where follicles prepare to resume growth. These phases illustrate that shedding some hair is a natural process, with normal ranges around 100 strands each day.
Loss of hair often goes unnoticed until more than 50% of hair has been lost. Such stages highlight the importance of understanding hair growth dynamics to manage expectations and treat hair loss effectively.
