Interview Do’s and Don’ts - If you want to increase your chances of getting the job you are applying for, it's crucial to know what is acceptable and what isn't when you go for an interview. While some may seem like small details, doing the right things can significantly impact your potential for being hired. It's essential to know what actions might earn you extra points and which ones could cost you the opportunity. Although most people are aware of what to do and not do during an interview, those looking for their first full-time job may not be as informed.
Things to Do Before and During an Interview:
- Find out something about the company.
- Have a hard copy of your resume available.
- Wear proper clothing for an interview (professional or business casual, depending on the company), ensuring it's freshly laundered and pressed or wrinkle-free.
- Prepare a list of questions to ask at the interview.
- Bring a notebook to take notes during the interview.
- Be punctual for the interview. If there are circumstances beyond your control, call the interviewer and give them the option to still see you or reschedule the interview.
- Leave your cell phone in the car or turn it off during the interview.
- Send a Thank You note to the interviewer as soon as possible after the interview to increase your chances of being hired.
Things Not to Do Before or During the Interview:
- Do not schedule interviews too close together in case additional tasks, like testing or meeting with the department manager, are needed.
- Do not bring your children or anyone else with you to an interview unless they are also applying for a position.
- Never smoke during an interview, even if allowed. If you smoke before the interview, use gum or breath mints and spray to remove the smell from your clothing.
- Never snack or chew gum during the interview. If you use gum or mints to kill the taste of cigarette smoke, finish them before you go in.
- Stay on topic during the interview and avoid personal discussions.
- Do not bring drinks; if the interviewer offers coffee, tea, or water, you may then accept.
Choose Your Words Carefully - When discussing a new position, even within the same company, be mindful of word choices. Many people miss out on good opportunities because they fail to use professional and grammatically correct language during an interview. Even if you don't use correct grammar regularly, you must during a job interview. While double negatives and slang might be acceptable with friends and co-workers, you should speak as if you are educated to win positive points during an interview.
